I grew up being told I could do anything I wanted, as long as I set my mind to it and put in the hard work. That ethic--you get what you give--has stayed with me as an adult. I don’t expect any free rides, and in fact I find the harder I work the more chances I have to help other people.

 

So why is it that recently the same generation of people (Baby Boomers) who always told my friends and me to take on the world has started to become the “voice of reason?”

Not All Web Sites Are Created Equal

The news that the lauded Editor & Publisher (E&P) has been sold and will survive to fight another day was officially announced last week. E&P, which has undergone many incarnations, mergers and forms since its founding in 1884, was in danger of dying. Fortunately, the E&P magazine and Web site were bought by an Irvine, California-based company called Duncan McIntosh Co. Inc. Well, maybe it was fortunate—it’s hard to say so early on.

Generation Shift

While reporting on a forum held on Tuesday in New York about the 20-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I noticed something odd. I seemed to be one of the youngest people in the room. At age 32, I’m not a kid anymore, and it got me thinking. The panelists were all professional journalists who had covered the fall. And as they reminisced about their memories and impressions, I noticed they offered virtually no context for the valuable perspectives they were sharing.
